Magic Strings

Out of a box comes a Harlequin scarf… But this scarf turns out to be a body, with a head, hands and feet. The sound of a harmonica, the pull of a few strings and magic happens.

A puppet comes to life and then other characters follow: a curious cat, a long-legged bird, a flamenco dancer, a b-boy or even a vampire in love.

The scenes go deeper into fantasy and illusion with the long-legged bird with its beautiful fluff fluttering about, the vampire in love letting off steam with his love, the Spanish flamenco dancer with her poetry in her dance steps and an electrifying guitarist, ending everything as it began, with the simple handkerchief puppet with its harlequin colors.

An enchanting show, where we are carried away by the magic of the movements, the color, the music, and the actions.

A show created to cheer up and create magic in the hearts of children, whether they are 3 or 103 years old.

The technique of string puppet theater made this invitation, the artist Rui Sousa, inevitable. Extremely complex, many countries named marionette this technique exclusively, which is so valuable due to its great degree of complexity, both in terms of construction and manipulation.

Considered the most distant puppet from the puppeteer, its operation by strings makes us believe in its independence and autonomy. And our minds are incredible at believing in the poetics of puppets and coming to think that these creatures created in wood are alive and perform superhuman actions that leave us fascinated.

Marionetas Rui Sousa

After an apprenticeship in painting and a musical education, as well as teaching and animation, at the turn of the millennium Rui Sousa became a professional puppeteer, practicing this profession to this day. As a puppeteer, he recovers the traditional arts of string puppetry (variety) and Teatro Dom Roberto, elevating them to living heritage. In addition to his work in theaters, auditoriums and school groups, he has been present at almost all the puppet festivals in Portugal several times.

Artist Rui Sousa has been working with puppets for a quarter of a century. He brought his “Fios Mágicos” to the Festival, a cast of characters who gave us a glimpse into his life. Animals, musicians, acrobats, dancers, and so many other characters shared their lives as puppets with the audience, much to everyone's delight. More than 200 spectators flocked to the Centro Multimeios de Espinho to share this family moment.
