The Stone Wolves

“The Stone Wolves” is a boy's journey into his heart, the place where a pack of wolves lives. Sometimes everything is peaceful, sometimes battles break out. Using puppets and a mobile scenic device, we propose a demystifying and questioning look at the character of the wolf, an intertwined mix of the savage and the terrible, as well as a fair and loyal side that comes naturally to him.

In the original story of Prokofiev's “Peter and the Wolf”, the wolf is the excuse for the boy's innocent mischief. In Suzie Templeton's beautiful wordless stop-motion version, one of the references of this show, the emphasis is on Peter's density and the way he transforms, overcomes and discovers his courage in saving the wolf that has eaten his best friend.

This highlighting of the non-linearity of things is the leitmotif of “Stone Wolves”. Using puppets and a mobile scenic device, we try to give space and body to a journey into the heart of the place where wolves live.

The set is an island of sheet metal and wood suspended on stilts over an “aquatic” surface. A space made up of many layers and hiding places that allow for play and the coming and going of various emotional states of Pedro and his different wolves. Sometimes predators, sometimes prey. Sometimes black and stormy wolves, sometimes white and angelic. And sometimes they blend into shades of gray.

The work presented to us by artist Sandra Neves and her Trupe Fandanga structure, with the support of CRL - Central Elétrica, is a consolidated work developed around the art of puppetry. Whether in the form of animated cinema or on stage, it shows us a unique universe, where organization and beauty are combined with chaos and a vision of error as scenic perfection. In a human exploration that is imbued with an artistic eye, exploring the plastic side that reveals a strong emotional intensity, we discover a world full of ingenuity and possibilities that emerge from the rubble in its great beauty.

Trupe Fandanga / Circolando – Central Elétrica

Trupe Fandanga was born in Porto in 2014, under the direction of Sandra Neves. It aims to be a space for research into the construction and manipulation of puppets and objects. It works with puppets outside the conventional performance space and has a special fondness for intimate, small-scale shows. In addition to Botequim, in 2019 A Trupe will premiere the puppet micro-show Onirotóptero, which follows the line of lickety-split theater. In 2021 it premieres Qubim, which circulates around the main puppet festivals nationally and internationally. In 2023, he premieres Ai de Mim, Ai do Eu!, his fourth creation.
